Szüret / Megérett a szölö
The end of World War II brought about the collapse of the Monarchy. The Hungarian Communist Party was reborn with increased strength thanks to Soviet support and took power in 1948. Everything that the great masters of the early 20th century had created was labeled by the new regime as “modernist formalism” and condemned. Musicians were obliged to adopt a new style of music which was ‘easy to understand and in a mood of constant optimism’.
- For fear of sanctions, I stopped using dodecaphony. In order to support my family’s needs, I accepted a number of commissions. Realism being fashionable, I composed cantatas on popular themes, notably “Szüret / Megérett a szölö” (Harvest / The grapes are ripe). — Ferenc Farkas
