Quaderno Romano
Written in Rome, in March 1931, my composition is in the way a « Roman note book ». The six short piano pieces, each dedicated to a Hungarian friend residing in Rome, form a cycle; their titles only evoke the atmosphere of each piece.
After a cadenza-like introductory movement, a calmer « cavatina » follows, with two themes that then merge. The third number is a dialogue between two voices, the fourth a fast rhythmic « caccia » and then a unisson « passeggiata » (walk) leads to the recitative-like epilogue, which closes the cycle. — Ferenc Farkas
